Before I started down the dangerous and slippery road of self publishing, I did the smart thing — I researched.
Actually, I bought a book. Borders was closing and I was able snag a glossy “how to successfully self publish” guide. I read it cover to cover in only a few hours. I thought I can do this. It all seemed rather simple, the way the author laid it out made self publish look like a breezy afternoon — at worst, a full weekend.
But, the kicker was … that nifty book I bought on self publishing … yeah, it was “traditionally published”. Strike one for figuring things out. If the guy writing the book on self publishing isn’t even self published what the hell am I supposed to learn from him?
What I learned on my adventure was this …
There are new people jumping into the pond all the time. The literary world is growing, day by day and sometimes, hour by hour to include both traditionally published authors as well as the self-pub’d. But … beyond that … it’s hardly a garden-variety experience.
I was lucky enough to meet up with a group of “been-there-done-that” folks … their wisdom and hard-earned knowledge made the process smoother for me. Now, I am in the amazing postion where I can pay that forward.
The Indie Resource Center is a spin-off of the La Bella Novella blog I’ve run for some time now. LBN is (and will remain) about my journey … all the things I tried and did wrong … and the things I tried and did right, as well as a little bit of standing up and introducing myself scattered in the mix. The Indie Resource Center is for you … actually, no, it’s for all of us. It’s less social and more about the brass tacks of publishing your own works by yourself. Teaching you how to be a business man or women, and think along those lines.
I’m going to try to give it to you straight here … and in the process, yes, probably humiliate myself some. The thing is, publishing — traditional or otherwise — is rarely, if ever, a one size fits all sort of garment ready to wear. But, even in that, there are common threads. It’s all about finding out what works best for you … and chasing that.
So, welcome! Please feel free to leave comments, start discussions, ask questions … this is our online think tank.
